The definition
Query fan-out is when a single user question is expanded into multiple related sub-queries, each retrieved separately, with the results synthesised into one answer.
So a question like “who should I hire to replace my roof” may internally become several searches about cost, materials, timing, local providers and credentials.
What this changes
You are no longer competing only for the phrase the user typed. You are competing across the set of sub-questions the system generated, and you may be absent from the answer because you were missing from a sub-query you never considered.
It also rewards topical coverage over single-page optimisation. A site answering the surrounding questions well has more chances to be retrieved.
What to do about it
Map the questions around the transaction, rather than only the transactional phrase. This is why our topical map treats fan-out queries as a required field before drafting rather than an afterthought.
Check it yourself
Take one transactional query you care about and write down every sub-question a careful buyer would need answered before hiring.
Then check how many of those have a page on your site. The gaps are where the fan-out is going somewhere else.
