A two-peak demand calendar the Florida metros do not have
Charlotte Douglas records 3,390 annual heating degree days against 1,519 cooling in the NOAA 1991–2020 normals, a 2.2:1 ratio. Tampa is 539 / 3,611 and Orlando 571 / 3,424, both roughly 0.15:1.
That is a 6.3× difference in heating demand, and it produces something the Florida metros structurally cannot have: a genuine winter no-heat emergency season, with furnace and heat-pump failures creating a second annual peak. The search calendar here has two shoulders instead of one, and a campaign built on a Florida rhythm will be mistimed twice a year.
Charlotte also has the newest housing stock of the three, median year built 1999 city, 1998 metro, and the highest single-family detached share at 65.5% of metro units. Newer stock plus detached dominance pushes the work mix toward maintenance, upgrade and efficiency rather than wholesale replacement.

The city does not issue building permits
This one catches people out. Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement, a division of LUESA, issues building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits under N.C.G.S. 160D-1110, not the City of Charlotte. The city's own site confirms it: commercial projects require permits from Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement, and the county cannot issue them until the city approves the site plan and releases any holds.
Content that sends a Charlotte homeowner or contractor to the city for a trade permit is wrong, and it is wrong in a way a local reader notices immediately.
On licensing, the North Carolina structure produces a sharp operational split. A Charlotte roofing or fencing company can work with no state contractor licence at all up to $40,000 per project under N.C.G.S. §87-1(a). An electrician or HVAC installer needs a state board licence from the first dollar, §87-43 for electrical, with §87-21 placing residential HVAC in heating group three regardless of size.
