AI search optimization is the work of making a business findable, verifiable and recommendable across AI-driven search surfaces, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, instead of optimising only for a ranked list of links.
- It is the umbrella, not a rival. GEO and AEO are labels for parts of it; this is the whole job.
- Every surface behaves differently. What moves a Google AI Overview is not what moves a ChatGPT recommendation, and treating them as one channel produces one mediocre result.
- Most of the work is unglamorous. Crawlability, accurate details, real reviews, plainly answered questions. The exotic tactics are mostly noise.
- It is buyable, so it is mis-sellable. The checklist at the end of this page is how to test whoever is quoting you.
Five places, five different sets of rules
Google AI Overviews. Sits on top of the results page and leans heavily on what Google already knows, its index, its Maps data, your Business Profile. Ranking and local prominence are strong inputs here, which is why classic SEO and local work remain the price of entry rather than a legacy expense.
ChatGPT. Blends what the model already absorbed with live browsing, depending on how the question is asked. Being consistently described across many sources matters more here than any single page, because you are trying to be a stable fact rather than a fresh search result.
Perplexity. Shows its citations, which makes it the most auditable of the group and the best place to start measuring. If you cannot get cited where citations are visible, you can stop wondering about the ones that hide them.
Gemini. Draws on Google’s understanding of entities and places, so the same identity discipline that feeds the Knowledge Graph feeds this.
Copilot. Sits on Bing’s index, which most businesses have never once looked at. It is frequently the cheapest gap to close, because so few competitors have bothered.
What the work actually is, in order
First, be eligible and be readable. A real, verifiable business in the category and area you claim, and a site that AI crawlers are permitted to read. A blocking rule at your CDN or a line in robots.txt can remove you from every answer at once, and it is usually a default nobody chose.
Second, make your identity boring and identical. One name, one address, one phone number, one service list, everywhere. Contradictions are the cheapest possible reason for a system to skip you in favour of a business whose story checks out.
Third, answer the real questions in public. The ones people ask before buying, including cost and timeline. Written answer-first, in sentences that survive being quoted alone.
Fourth, build corroboration. Reviews that describe actual projects, directories that matter in your trade, local press, association and supplier pages. One source saying you are good is a claim; several agreeing is evidence.
Fifth, measure before you believe any of it. Baseline first, same questions monthly, screenshots kept. Without this you are buying opinions.

How to test anyone selling you this
Ask what they measure and how. If the answer is a percentage, ask for the question set, the platforms, and how many times each question is run. A number with no denominator is decoration. If they cannot produce a method in one breath, there isn’t one.
Ask what they cannot do. A truthful provider will tell you they cannot guarantee inclusion in an AI answer, cannot control model updates, and cannot promise a knowledge panel. If nothing is off the table, everything on it is suspect.
Ask who does the work. In this field the gap between the person who sold you and the person doing it is where results go missing.
Ask what happens if you leave. Pages, profiles, data, documentation, who owns them. Work created for you should stay yours.
Ask them to show their own numbers. Anyone claiming to build AI visibility should be able to show you theirs. Here are ours, updated whichever direction they move, and here is what we refuse to promise, in writing, before anyone signs anything.
This page defines the work. It does not sell it. What the engagement looks like, scope, cadence, reporting, is on the AI Visibility service page, and the category as a whole is mapped at AI visibility, defined.

Fair questions about AI search optimization
Is this different from SEO or just SEO again?
The inputs overlap heavily; the target and the scoreboard do not. Ranking well is still one of the strongest ways to be retrieved, so SEO did not stop mattering. What changed is that ranking no longer guarantees the visit, and that measuring your presence now requires sampling generated answers rather than reading a position report.
Which surface should I care about first?
Whichever one your customers actually use, which for most home-service buyers still means Google — the AI Overview sits above the same map pack and links you were already competing for. Perplexity is the best place to start measuring because it shows its sources. Copilot is the most common easy gap.
Do I need to be on every platform?
You are not "on" any of them — there is no account to open. You are either verifiable and corroborated or you are not, and that condition is what these systems read. The work is largely shared across surfaces; the tuning at the edges is what differs.
How much of this can I do myself?
More than most agencies will admit. Checking your robots.txt, fixing name and address conflicts, claiming the listings that matter in your trade, and asking every customer for a review the compliant way will move you further than any clever tactic. The parts that are hard are the measurement discipline and knowing which of the hundred possible fixes is worth doing first.
What does it cost?
That depends on the market and how much repair the foundations need, and this page is the wrong place for a number pulled out of the air — our actual figures are published in plain numbers on the pricing page. What is free is finding out where you stand: the Visibility Check below costs nothing and you keep the findings whether or not you ever speak to us.
