Is SEO dead in 2026?
No, and the honest answer is more interesting than the question.
- Answers moved above results, so the traffic arrives less often.
- The work underneath is largely the same work.
- Attribution broke, and flat-looking quarters may not be flat.
- The businesses being cited are the ones that did the ordinary work well.
What actually changed
Answers moved above results. AI Overviews and assistants resolve a growing share of searches without a click, so the traffic that used to arrive from position one arrives less often.
Measuring only sessions, you read that as death. Measuring presence, you read it as relocation.
What did not change
The work underneath is largely the same work. A crawlable site, consistent facts about your business, content that answers real questions, corroborating sources, reviews that keep arriving. Those inputs feed conventional rankings and AI answers alike.
The map pack did not go anywhere either, and for a local trade it still takes the clicks that matter most.
What got harder
Attribution. A buyer can now be recommended by an assistant, look you up by name, and call, with nothing in analytics connecting those events. If your reporting assumes visibility equals visits, it will show a flat quarter that was not flat.
Also measurement itself. Answers vary between identical runs, so a single check proves little and honest measurement costs more effort than it used to.
The part people selling the death of SEO leave out
The businesses being cited in AI answers are, overwhelmingly, the ones that did the ordinary work well. There is no separate discipline that skips it.
Anyone promising your business will appear in ChatGPT is selling weather. What can be done is the same unglamorous foundation, measured honestly, on surfaces that now include a few more places.
