Roofing marketing in Atlanta

Georgia will not licence you to put a roof on. The city will decide whether you may touch the tree next to it.

Where we actually are

Mindflow works from one place: Atlanta, Georgia. There is no Mindflow office in Atlanta and no address for us here, because none exists. This is a market we serve rather than a market we sit in. Our one real location is here.

Key takeaways
  • Georgia does not license roofing contractors at state level
  • A pre-submittal arborist meeting gates residential permits as of 25 June 2025
  • The owner-occupied median build year is 1976, roughly a fifty-year-old house
  • The city spans Fulton and DeKalb counties
THE LICENSING PICTURE

The state does not license roofers, and that cuts both ways

Georgia licenses conditioned air, electrical and plumbing contractors under O.C.G.A. 43-14-8 with no dollar threshold. Its Residential and General Contractors board publishes a specialty policy statement that places roofing outside state licensure entirely. Above $2,500, general residential remodeling needs a residential contractor licence, and roofing on its own does not.

Two consequences follow. Entry is easy here, so the market carries more competitors than a licensed state does, and a storm brings more of them. And “licensed and insured” means less in Atlanta than a buyer assumes, because there is no roofing licence to hold.

That leaves proof to be carried by something else. Insurance certificates, manufacturer certifications, a real address and a review record are what actually differentiate here, and they are what a buyer or an AI assistant can check.

THE LOCAL DETAIL THAT MATTERS

The tree ordinance sits in front of the permit

Atlanta has the highest urban tree canopy of any major US city, measured at 47.9%. The city has built a permitting regime around it, and since 25 June 2025 residential applicants must complete a pre-submittal arborist meeting before the permit application is submitted. That is a gate rather than a follow-up step.

The Tree Protection Ordinance protects hardwoods at six inches diameter at breast height and pines at twelve, on private property. Removal requires an arborist permit, monetary recompense, two public sign postings and a five-business-day neighbour appeal window.

For roofing the relevance is access and scheduling. Crane placement, staging, tear-off debris and overhanging limb removal all touch protected trees or their critical root zones on a canopy this dense. A roof quoted without checking whether the job needs tree work is a roof quoted without its longest lead item.

One more jurisdictional fact worth holding: the city boundary sits in both Fulton and DeKalb counties, which matters for anything county-dependent.

THE DEMAND PICTURE

A homeowner market older than the headline suggests

Atlanta's citywide median year of construction is 1987, which understates the homeowner market badly. Separated by tenure, the owner-occupied median year built is 1976 and renter-occupied is 1995. The median Atlanta owner-occupied home is roughly fifty years old.

A fifty-year-old house has been re-roofed once or twice already, which makes this a replacement and re-replacement market rather than a first-roof one. Buyers here have done this before and ask sharper questions.

The city is also majority-renter at 46.3% owner-occupancy, so a meaningful share of the roofing decisions in the city limits are made by a landlord or a property manager rather than the occupant. That is a different sale, on a different timeline, with a different tolerance for disruption.

All figures on this page are carried from the primary sources cited on our Atlanta market page: US Census QuickFacts and ACS tables B25003, B25024, B25035 and B25037; the Trees Atlanta and Georgia Tech Urban Tree Canopy study; City of Atlanta Office of Buildings guidance and the Atlanta Tree Protection Ordinance, including the pre-submittal arborist meeting requirement effective 25 June 2025. Licensing is from the Georgia Secretary of State licensing boards, the Traditional Specialty Contractors policy statements, and O.C.G.A. Sections 43-14-8 and 43-41-2. Checked 2026-07-28.

This page covers roofing specifically. The wider market picture for this city, covering climate, housing stock, storm exposure and which body issues the permit, sits on the Atlanta market page, and the state rules are on the Georgia page.

How we measure it

Every figure on this page has a source and a date

What is missing is deliberate: no cost per lead, no conversion rate, no local benchmark. Those move by market and season, and any number published here would be wrong by the time you read it. Your own account holds the real one, and our calculators do the arithmetic once you have it.

We publish the complete measurement protocol before you pay anything: the six-layer audit, the sampling method, a real report with the numbers left in. No ranking guarantees.

FAIR QUESTIONS

Fair questions about roofing in Atlanta

Do I need a licence to roof in Georgia?

Not a state roofing licence, because Georgia does not issue one. Residential contracting above $2,500 needs a residential contractor licence, and local requirements still apply. Conditioned air, electrical and plumbing are licensed from the first dollar; roofing is not.

Why does a tree ordinance affect a roofing job?

Because since June 2025 the arborist meeting comes before permit submission, and roofing work on a 47.9% canopy routinely touches protected trees through access, staging and limb removal. It is a schedule-gating item rather than a subcontracted afterthought.

Is Atlanta a replacement market or a new-roof market?

Replacement, and often second replacement. The owner-occupied median build year is 1976, so most owner-occupied roofs here have been done before.
